Setting intentions + being in alignment

Happy New Year! We made it, and I’m so thankful to be here.

I don’t know about you, but the new year is always a weird time for me. I'm excited and expectant for a fresh start and new chapter, but at the same time the overthinker in me is also anxious, worried and stressed about all the things I need to accomplish in the new year. This feeling of “being behind” on things I didn’t get to in 2020 or worrying if I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing. It’s a constant cycle that I’ve learned will leave me always feeling defeated.

So, this year I’m making a conscious effort to rather than just setting these big picture goals, I'm also setting intentions for myself and cultivating practical ways to be and stay in alignment with those things. It’s my approach to stop putting so much pressure on myself and to go into the year with a more thoughtful mindset.

Some of my intentions for 2021 are:

  1. Be consistent in my fitness routine and make healthier choices in my diet

  2. Continue prioritizing my mental health and self-care

  3. Plan more “me-time” with a new activity/class/skill

  4. Create more space for peace in my life

  5. Disconnect from my phone/social media/the world more often

What are some intentions you want to lean into in 2021? Make a list and incorporate them into your daily/weekly/monthly routines.

Making a list is the easy part but making sure we’re in alignment with ourselves is where the real work lies. Alignment to me is a powerful word: a position of agreement, or the proper position or state of adjustment. For me, it’s a mental and spiritual grounding, discipline, and practice that has to take place on an almost everyday basis for me to be truly in alignment. It starts with my thought life, self-talk, and where/what I allow to devote my energy to, among other things. Do I fall off track? Of course, all the time. But choosing to start again (and as often as we need to) is all we can strive to do.
