Choosing joy + the power of gratitude
Lately I’ve found myself having to, and wanting to intentionally practice having better gratitude and being more present in the now. Gratitude is not something that comes super easy for me all the time. I’m VERY impatient, (ask my mom) I tend to dwell on the “what if’s,” and I am always worrying about my next move instead of living in the moment.
But in a season that’s been completely uncertain and has us all wondering what the “new normal” will look like, now is the perfect time to appreciate what’s in front of us and live every day to the fullest. With practicing gratitude, also comes joy. When we can give thanks and be gracious for the life we have, (even when it doesn’t always look how we want it to) there’s so much joy in that!
Two pieces of inspiration I’m holding close to my heart right now are:
This scripture from Romans 12: 12: “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer."
This quote from Maya Angelou:
“Let gratitude be the pillow upon which you kneel to say your nightly prayer.”
Here are a few ways I’m practicing gratitude and choosing joy:
- Starting my day with the TIME acronym (thankfulness, inspiration, meditation, and exercise).
I stole this from Jay Shetty; it reminds me to begin each day being thankful, finding daily inspiration, taking time to sit with myself, and getting the body moving - because it's good for the soul!
- Ending my day celebrating myself by writing down my personal wins/moment of joy.
I saw this on one of the Shine app resources. Each night, write down: Today I celebrate myself for _______.
Lastly, if you find yourself struggling to find joy in your life right now, start small. Maybe getting out of bed and taking a walk was just enough, or maybe it was watching your favorite TV show, or taking some much needed time off. Whatever your joy looks like - it’s worth celebrating.
Reflection questions: How are you choosing joy in this season?
In what way can you practice gratitude every day?
